Mid-victorian Tea Caddy of Rectangular Form, Glass Mixing Bowl & Key

19th century
Description

A good-looking mid-Victorian, burr walnut-veneered tea caddy. It has two removable tea canisters with brass hinged lids, and the original lock and key.

After opening the top, a central glass mixing bowl can be seen, flanked on either side by the tea canisters, with the lids having a small turned bone knob. It features a small brass escutcheon to the front of the lock and sits on four brass feet. The base is lined with marbled paper that has a clear wax finish.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. It has undergone some minor restoration to the veneer. Good colour and patina. Again, in good, presentable condition.

Aftercare:

Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over

with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain

its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the

waxed surface.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This mid-Victorian tea caddy is made from dark brown mahogany with a polished finish and burr walnut veneer, complemented by a brass keyhole escutcheon, a brass lock with an original key attached by a tassel, and a cut glass central mixing bowl. The hinged lid opens to reveal a green felt-lined interior with a decorative braided border, housing two removable tea canisters with brass hinges and turned bone knobs. The rectangular box sits flat on a surface with visible signs of minor veneer restoration and a warm patina developed over time. Measuring 14 cm high by 22.8 cm wide and 13 cm deep, this lidded container fits easily into a domestic setting. Place this item on top of a sideboard in a living room, study, or gentleman's library as a decorative storage accessory or a functional organiser for small household items.

A Victorian tea caddy is a lockable wooden box produced during the 19th century, specifically designed to store dried tea leaves which were a costly commodity at the time.

These caddies were typically constructed from solid or veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, and were often fitted with brass locks, fabric linings, and cut glass mixing bowls.

Authentic period examples generally display hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brass hardware, original keyholes, and subtle signs of age such as natural patina and minor wood contraction.

Place the caddy open or closed on a sideboard, console table, or library shelf, pairing it with historic ceramics or stacked books to add textual interest.

Clean the timber using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish sparingly to maintain the finish, ensuring the piece remains away from direct radiators and sunlight.
