William IV Two Sectional Tea Caddy with Key, Circa 1835

19th century
Description

A William IV figured mahogany with boxwood-strung edges. Two sections with removable lids. Has the original brass lock with what appears to be its original key.

To the front, there is a circular boxwood escutcheon. The brass hinged top lifts, revealing the interior, which has two sections, each with a removable mahogany lid with a small turned knob. The interior of the lid has been lined with a red waxed floral paper. This was more in keeping with the Regency period, but the circular escutcheon suggests it is slightly later in date. The base is lined with waxed bubble paper.

Cleaned, re-waxed and polished. It has its fair share of knocks and scrapes, showing that it was well-used. The boxwood stringing is a particularly nice feature, enhancing the lovely grain pattern of the figured mahogany.

Aftercare:

Cleaned and restored (where necessary) to a high presentable standard. Periodically wipe over

with a soft cloth. Occasionally, use a spray furniture polish containing beeswax to maintain

its satin sheen. Please don't use a silicone spray as this could have a detrimental effect on the

waxed surface.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.

This William IV tea caddy dates from the nineteenth century and is styled for a gentleman's library. The piece uses figured mahogany with boxwood-strung edges and a circular boxwood escutcheon, finished with a cleaned, re-waxed and polished satin sheen that reveals its natural grain pattern. The hinged lid opens to display two internal lidded compartments featuring small turned wooden knobs, a red embossed paper lining inside the top lid, and an original brass lock accompanied by a brass key with a tassel. Wear includes a fair share of knocks and scrapes from past use. The caddy measures 12.2 cm high, 22.8 cm wide and 12.2 cm deep. Placed on a sideboard top, this box serves well in a home today for holding small keepsakes or as a decorative desk accessory. The rich dark brown timber tones complement traditional and eclectic interiors, while the compact scale allows placement in living rooms, studies or hallways without taking up significant space.

A William IV tea caddy is a lockable container produced between 1830 and 1837 designed to store loose tea leaf blends securely.

Craftsmen typically constructed these boxes using fine wood veneers such as rosewood or mahogany, alongside brass escutcheons, steel lock mechanisms, and paper or lead linings.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct construction including hand-cut dovetail joints, slotted brass screws, natural surface wear on the base, and original brass fittings.

Position the caddy on a sideboard, bookshelf, or desk to introduce historical texture and dark wood tones into a contemporary living space.

Dust the exterior regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish periodically, keeping the box away from radiators and direct sunlight.
