This 19th-century Regency wall mirror displays a rectangular glass plate enclosed by a giltwood and gesso frame in a rich gold finish. The architectural composition includes fluted Corinthian pilasters flanking the sides, a triangular pediment with a broken arched form, and a carved crest adorned with acanthus leaves alongside the square and compass of the Freemasons. Details comprise spherical finials above the capitals and raised star bosses on the base corners. The original water gilding exhibits surface wear that reveals the warm red bole beneath, while the mirror plate is a later replacement. Measuring 75 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 6.5 cm deep, this piece brings a formal classical presence to a home interior. Positioned in living spaces or hallways, the mirror mounts easily on walls to add reflection and light to reception rooms or bedrooms. The antique craftsmanship and neoclassical motifs suit traditional and eclectic interiors alike, functioning effectively above a mantelpiece or a side table. The compact depth allows it to sit flush against wall surfaces without dominating smaller rooms, while the architectural pediment provides a strong visual focal point. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the gilded surface and glass plate.

A Regency giltwood mirror is characterised by Classical architectural features, such as pediments, Corinthian pilasters, and carved motifs like stars and crests, reflecting the 19th-century interest in Greek and Roman antiquity.

These frames were typically constructed from carved timber coated with gesso, followed by a layer of coloured clay known as bole, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf were applied and burnished.

Authentic pieces often exhibit water gilding where the red or grey clay bole shows through areas of natural rubbing, along with subtle lines where individual gold leaf sheets overlap.

A giltwood mirror functions effectively as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece or modern sideboard, balancing contemporary minimalist decor with classic architectural detailing.

Dust the frame gently with a soft, dry feather duster or camel-hair brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or damp cloths which can dissolve gesso and damage gold leafing.
