Tea caddies originated in the 18th century when tea was an expensive commodity, requiring secure, lockable containers to protect the precious leaves from theft and moisture.

Craftsmen typically utilised fine hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, yew, and burl veneers, often incorporating brass hardware, ivory or bone escutcheons, and velvet or foil linings.

Authenticity is determined by examining the dovetail joints, hand-cut screws, natural ageing of the wood, traditional adhesives, and the presence of period-appropriate locks and hinges.

This piece can be displayed closed on a surface such as a mantelpiece or side table to highlight the natural grain of the wood as a sculptural object.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and occasionally applying a specialist microcrystalline wax, avoiding direct sunlight and moisture.
