This Regency convex mirror exhibits a grand style executed in giltwood, glass, and ebonised wood. The round frame shows elaborate gilded finish surfaces with rich gold tones, complemented by a delicate inner ebonised slip and a fine bead moulding following the circular glass. Crowning the top is a sculptural carved foliate cresting displaying organic scrollwork and leaf motifs. The glass is round, curved, and convex, capturing a wide spherical reflection. The wooden construction shows minor surface wear and natural antique ageing consistent with the Regency period. Measuring 32 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 9 cm deep, it has a compact footprint suited for hanging. Ideal for interior placement above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining space, it functions as a decorative wall mirror that adds traditional character and historical presence to contemporary home settings.

FAQs

A Regency convex mirror is a circular wall mirror originating from the early 19th century, characterized by an outward-curving glass panel set within a gilded carved wood or plaster frame. These mirrors were designed to reflect an entire room from a single viewpoint.

These mirrors typically feature carved timber frames finished with water-gilded gold leaf over gesso, an inner ebonised wooden or plaster reeded slip, and hand-blown convex mirror glass.

Authentic pieces feature signs of age such as gentle oxidation or distressing on the original mirror glass, hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, and authentic wear to the gilding revealing the underlying red or grey bole clay.

A Regency convex mirror functions as a focal point when placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or dining room sideboard, where its curved glass disperses light throughout the space.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive solutions on the water-gilded frame, and clean the glass using a lightly dampened cloth dried immediately afterward.
