This nineteenth-century Regency wall mirror is a circular giltwood piece finished in bright gold with an ebonised wooden inner slip. The heavy wooden frame has a continuous border of raised spherical gilt balls and a traditional circular moulded profile enclosing the convex glass plate. The mirror surface shows significant signs of age through extensive dark spotting, oxidation and heavy foxing across the central and lower portions of the plate. Measuring 45 cm high by 45 cm wide with a depth of 8 cm, this substantial wall hanging has a solid circular silhouette suited for interior placement above a living room mantelpiece or within a traditional hallway setting. Regency convex mirrors were designed to reflect wider portions of a room, providing functional light distribution alongside decorative grandness. The combination of rich gold leaf finishes, dark ebonised mouldings and rhythmic sphere ornamentation creates strong visual texture against interior walls. Natural degradation on the historic glass plate contributes authentic character appropriate for period and traditional interior schemes. The compact proportions allow placement within smaller architectural spaces while retaining the decorative presence characteristic of nineteenth-century wall furniture.

Convex mirrors feature curved glass that bows outwards, providing a wide-angle view of an entire room. They gained immense popularity in Britain during the late Georgian and Regency periods, serving both as decorative wall features and as functional items that allowed servants to observe a room discreetly.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber or gesso over wood, finished with water gilding using genuine gold leaf. The inner frame features a reeded ebonised slip, while the outer moulding is decorated with relief spheres or balls.

Authentic pieces display natural signs of age, including foxing or silvering degradation on the heavy glass plate, slight cracking or craquelure in the gesso under the gilded surface, and traditional hand-cut timber backing boards.

A gilt convex mirror acts as a focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece, console table, or in a hallway. Its circular form contrasts well with rectilinear architecture, and the convex reflection adds visual depth to smaller spaces.

Dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which dissolve traditional water gilding. The glass should be cleaned sparingly using a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring moisture does not touch the gilding or slip.
