This Victorian wall mirror exhibits Regency Revival style through a grand round giltwood frame featuring applied ball ornamentation and flanking carved scrollwork. The gilt finish shows obvious signs of wear and tear, highlighting the aged character of the wood and the detailed carving of the spread eagle cresting at the top alongside the acanthus leaf apron at the base. A contrasting ebonised reeded slip frames the later convex mirror glass inside the circular aperture. Measuring 102 cm high, 75 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the piece makes a striking statement on an interior wall. Positioned in a contemporary home, this mirror works particularly well hung above a living room mantelpiece or in an entrance hallway to reflect light and add architectural presence. The combination of gilded surfaces, carved motifs, and black slip brings traditional texture and antique character to both classic and eclectic room schemes.

FAQs

Convex mirrors gained widespread popularity during the Regency and Victorian eras, often functioning as decorative convex reflectors that allowed occupants to view an entire room from a single vantage point. Surmounted eagle crestings drew heavily upon neoclassical symbolism, representing authority, vigilance, and classical antiquity.

Authentic period mirrors were constructed with hand-carved pine or lime wood frames, coated with layers of gesso and bole before applying fine gold leaf using water gilding techniques. The mirror glass was mounted behind an ebonised reeded wooden slip, framed by molded spherules or ball embellishments.

Authentic examples exhibit natural surface oxidisation, minor wear to the gilding revealing red or grey bole underneath, and hand-carved wood jointing on the reverse. The mirror glass frequently shows light foxing, while the ebonised slip and carved details display subtle irregularities typical of hand craftsman techniques.

A carved giltwood convex mirror serves as a focal point when positioned above a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or within an entryway. Its warm gold tones complement dark paint schemes, wood paneling, or neutral contemporary backdrops, adding depth and architectural structure.

Avoid liquid glass cleaners or harsh chemical polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying water-soluble gesso and damage the delicate gold leaf. Lightly dust the frame using a soft dry camel-hair brush, and clean the glass plate using a damp microfibre cloth without spraying water directly near the wooden frame.
