This Edwardian cheval mirror adopts a George III style in warm brown walnut with a polished finish and original quarter plate bevelled edge glass. The tall rectangular glass tilts within uprights that display moulded fronts, turned finials, and a carved shell cresting to the arched pediment. Below, a cabriole foot base holds original brass castors alongside a turned supporting stretcher, while the rear reveals a polished panelled back for free standing. The piece measures 152.5 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this freestanding mirror fits into an empty corner of a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to offer full length reflection. The classic timber tones and traditional carving blend easily with period or transitional interiors, adding functional elegance and a warm presence to daily routines.

Developed in the late eighteenth century, the cheval mirroralso known as a cheval glasswas designed as a full-length, free-standing dressing mirror supported on a frame with four legs, allowing the glass to pivot.

Cheval mirrors from the George III period were typically constructed using fine hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, complemented by brass fittings, castors, and original mercury-backed glass plates.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate joinery, original brass pivot mechanisms, natural oxidisation on the timber underside, and original silvering or characteristic foxing on the mirror glass.

A classic timber cheval mirror functions well in a dressing area, master bedroom, or hallway corner, offering both reflective light and architectural height to balance contemporary furnishings.

The wooden frame should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned using natural beeswax, while the mirror glass should be wiped lightly with a damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals near the silvered backing.
