This Edwardian cheval mirror adopts a traditional English Country House style, formed from warm brown mahogany with a clear glass plate and polished brass hardware. The frame features a curved arched crest rail at the top and holds a vertical mirror glass suspended between two upright posts with turned wooden finials at the peaks. The side pivots allow the mirror glass to tilt to various angles, supported below by four outswept sabre legs that terminate in ornate brass paw castors. Surface details include smooth wooden mouldings around the rectangular frame edges and visible grain patterns throughout the polished timber structure. Measuring 159 cm high by 57 cm wide, the piece stands independently on the floor. It functions as a dressing mirror suitable for placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to provide a full-length reflection.

A cheval mirror, or dressing glass, is a full-length floor-standing mirror set within a frame on upright posts. Originating in the late eighteenth century and remaining popular through the Edwardian era, it features side pivots that allow the mirror frame to tilt to various angles.

Edwardian examples were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or satinwood. The glass plates were framed securely and mounted with brass pivot handles, supported by splayed legs fitted with brass castors for ease of movement.

Authentic period pieces show hand-cut joinery, original brass hardware with natural surface oxidisation, and hand-finished timber backs. The mirror plate may exhibit mild natural foxing or de-silvering consistent with age, alongside original threaded adjustment knobs.

Place the mirror in a dressing room, bedroom corner, or hallway alcove to maximize natural light and create a sense of vertical space. Its classic lines provide an elegant focal point when contrasted against contemporary minimalist decor or traditional schemes.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the finish. Clean the mirror glass using a damp cloth or specialized glass cleaner, avoiding liquid seepage into the wooden frame borders.
