A cheval mirror, taking its name from the French word for horse owing to its four-legged base, is a full-length dressing mirror designed to tilt between two vertical pillars. Popularised during the 19th century, these freestanding mirrors were designed for dressing rooms and bedrooms.

Victorian cheval mirrors were primarily crafted using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, frequently featuring flame mahogany or walnut veneers. The mirror plates were made from silvered glass, held in position by brass handles, pins, and wooden friction fittings.

Authentic Victorian examples feature hand-cut joinery, original brass adjustment knobs or side handles, and heavy timber bases supported on turned feet or castors. Inspecting the back reveals solid wooden backboards displaying natural age-related shrinkage and patination.

Position a mahogany cheval mirror in a dressing room, bedroom alcove, or wide hallway to bounce natural light and add vertical structure. The rich timber tones contrast effectively against contemporary neutral paint schemes and textured wallpapers.

Dust the mahogany frame regularly using a soft microfibre cloth and apply beeswax twice yearly to protect the finish. Clean the glass plate using a damp cloth, taking care to prevent moisture from seeping into the edges of the frame or affecting the backing.
