This late 19th-century Victorian cheval mirror dates from 1890 and is constructed from mahogany with a warm brown polished finish, glass, and brass hardware. The piece comprises a large, rectangular swinging glass frame within a moulded wooden border, suspended between two upright pillars topped with decorative brass finials. The frame has an adjustable tilt action, allowing the glass angle to be modified. The uprights are mounted on four gracefully curved, splayed legs fitted with original brass castors at the feet to facilitate movement across the floor. Measuring 151.5 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 60.5 cm deep, this substantial dressing glass is in good repolished condition, presenting a clean timber surface and clear reflection. The classic English country house design suits placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to provide a full-length reflection while adding traditional furniture character to an interior scheme.

A cheval mirror, named after the French word for horse due to its four-legged frame structure, is a freestanding full-length mirror that tilts on pivot hinges.

Nineteenth-century cheval mirrors were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, accompanied by silvered glass plates and brass fittings.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut joinery on the rear frame, solid brass tension screws, original brass castors, and light oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate.

Place the mirror in a dressing room or master bedroom corner where it can reflect natural window light and introduce warmth through its dark timber tones.

Treat the timber frame with natural beeswax polish using a lint-free cloth, and clean the glass plate with non-ammonia solutions to protect the backing silver.
