Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Turned uprights with ring mouldings and acorn finials: crisp lathe work.
Reeded semicircular blocks over the trestle base: architectural styling above the feet.
Turned wooden friction knobs at the pivots: traditional hand screws for holding tilt.
Swept legs terminating in small brass castors: low splay designed for stability.
Darkening around turned joints and recesses: natural accumulation of polish over time.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early 19th century Regency cheval mirror takes the form of a solid mahogany dressing glass framed in dark brown timber. The tall rectangular mirror plate possesses a bevelled edge, held between two turned column supports topped with finials and fitted with adjustable side knobs. The framework rests on splayed mahogany legs finished with brass castors, connected by a turned stretcher bar near the base. The piece measures 147 cm high, 72 cm wide and 63 cm deep. Position this freestanding mirror in a bedroom, dressing room or empty corner to serve daily personal reflection needs. The traditional design suits period interiors, adding functional elegance while reflecting light around the space. The sturdy construction allows the mirror to tilt securely using the side handles, offering adjustable angles for dressing and grooming.

A Regency cheval mirror is a freestanding full-length mirror set within a timber frame, suspended between two upright supports on splayed legs. Popularised in the early 19th century, it features a swivel mechanism to adjust the angle of the glass plate for dressing.

These mirrors were traditionally constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, complemented by turned timber uprights, brass fittings, and silvered glass plates.

Authentic period pieces display hand-turned side posts, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, original brass adjusters or castors, and subtle oxidisation marks on the original mirror plate.

Place a cheval mirror in a dressing room, bedroom corner, or hallway to reflect natural light and create architectural depth alongside modern furnishings.

Dust the wooden frame regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply beeswax polish along the timber grain, whilst cleaning the glass plate with a mild cleaner sprayed directly onto a cloth.
