Mahogany Cheval Mirror C.1840

Description

Handsome mid 19th.c. mahogany cheval dressing mirror on stand c.1840. Original 28" x 45" mirror plate within a mahogany veneered frame. Angle adjustable within a secondary frame, veneered to match and with applied mouldings and a pierced brass mount at the centre above the mirror. On curving and tapering legs front and rear with neat little brass barrel castors. Some wear and repairs to the veneers and minor tarnish to the mirror (which could be replaced if preferred). Generally very good colour and condition, restored cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

A cheval mirror is a full-length, freestanding mirror mounted on a frame with two upright supports, allowing the mirror glass to tilt forwards and backwards. The design originated in the late 18th century and gained widespread popularity throughout the 19th century across Regency and Victorian dressing rooms.

High-quality 19th-century examples were predominantly constructed from solid mahogany, often featuring decorative flame mahogany veneers over pine or oak carcase wood. The fittings typically included brass castors, brass adjustment knobs or pins, and silvered glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces display historical construction methods, such as hand-cut joinery, original brass castors secured to the base, and minor oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate. The mahogany timber will show a natural patina with depth of colour that synthetic modern finishes cannot replicate.
