Referred to by Gillows as a Spanish chair. See ‘Gillows of Lancaster & London’ by Susan E Stuart Plate 224. Stuart mentions an “elegantly simple chair with a curiously cotemporary feel, saying a similar design described as a Spanish chair was drawn in the Estimate Sketch Book on the 25th October 1823”. However, this chair also shows similarities to a design by J.C. Loudon, illustrated in his “Encyclopedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture and Furniture” 1833. Plate 1911.
Neither the Gillows or Loudon illustrations have all the features of our chair, including the S scroll shaped profile back, design led castors that flow with the legs, wider arm supports and the applied central roundels.
The chair we are selling seems far richer in design and is of larger proportions.
Width of chair 64cm.
Height 100cm, Depth 93cm, Width 71cm, Seat Height 45cm
