Rococo style mirrors originated in 18th-century France and are characterised by elaborate asymmetric scrollwork, natural motifs such as acanthus leaves and shells, and gilded carved frames.

Historically, these frames were hand-carved from softwoods or hardwoods, sealed with gesso, and finished using water or oil gilding with thin layers of gold leaf alongside painted accents.
