Description

An amazing and very rare pair of antique wing back armchairs by Hille. They were made by Ray & Solomon Hille in England, and date from around the 1920’s.

The quality is fantastic, with very generous proportions, they are also extremely comfortable. The shapely frames with humpbacks, sit on finely carved solid walnut legs.

We have recently had these fully re-upholstered in a beautiful charcoal wool fabric that contrasts nicely with the light wood legs that have just been cleaned and re-polished. The condition is excellent throughout, with only some minor wear and patina remaining to the wood under the polish.

Width – 35 inches , 89 cm

Depth – 36 inches , 92 cm

Height – 46 inches , 117 cm

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Wingback chairs originated in the seventeenth century, primarily designed to protect sitters from drafts in heated rooms and to trap fireplace heat within the seating area.

Authentic period pieces typically feature solid hardwood frames, traditional coil spring upholstery, horsehair or wool stuffing, and hand-carved wooden legs.

Authentication involves examining the joinery methods, inspecting the timber ageing, checking for maker marks or stamps, and assessing the wear patterns on the frame and upholstery.

They serve as statement pieces in living spaces or libraries, pairing effectively with minimalist contemporary furnishings to create a balanced contrast of eras.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment, keeping the furniture away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels.
