FAQs

Regency style mirrors, originating from the early 19th century in Britain, are characterised by classical symmetry, heavily gilded frames, and often feature convex glass designed to reflect a wide-angle view of a room.

These pieces were typically constructed using carved wood or gesso over a wooden core, finished with genuine gold leaf gilding, and fitted with hand-blown curved glass.

Authentic period examples often exhibit signs of age such as foxing in the mirror plate, shrinkage cracks in the gesso, and hand-applied gold leaf rather than modern metallic paint.

A convex mirror works effectively as a focal point on a narrow wall space, gallery wall, or above a fireplace mantel, adding depth and reflecting light into smaller rooms.

Gilded surfaces are extremely fragile and should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush. The glass plate can be cleaned sparingly with a microfiber cloth slightly dampened with distilled water, avoiding contact with the fragile frame.
