Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A near pair of nineteenth-century smoker's chairs constructed from ash and elm follows the Victorian country style, displaying a warm brown timber colour with a rich polished patina across both wooden frames. Each armchair features a curved crest rail, spindle-turned back supports, shaped saddle seats, and heavy turned front legs joined by stretchers. Visible surface marks, grain variations and natural wear indicate previous use over time, while both items remain structurally sturdy without any visible breaks or cracks. Measuring 82 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, these seating options suit placement around a partner desk in a traditional study, a reading corner, or a gentleman's library setting. They provide practical daily seating for home offices or studies while adding historic character to traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

A smokers bow, often referred to as a Captains chair, is a low-backed wooden armchair featuring a continuous curved armrest, turned spindle uprights, and a shaped seat, originating in 19th-century Britain for office, commercial, and domestic use.

These chairs were predominantly built using British hardwoods, combining solid elm for the carved saddle seat with ash or beech for the steam-bent bow armrest, spindles, and legs.

Authentic period examples feature steam-bent crest rails, saddle seats hand-carved from thick timber with distinct grain patterns, turned legs pegged directly into the underside, and natural surface wear around the armrests and footrests.

A pair of Captains chairs can be positioned on either side of a side table, used as desk seating in a home office, or placed at the ends of a dining table to add historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the wood grain to maintain the finish and protect the timber against humidity changes.
