Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early eighteenth century, evolving as regional vernacular seating constructed by local craftspeople. The stickback style uses vertical wooden spindles fitted into a solid seat, reflecting traditional English rural furniture making.

Traditional English Windsor chairs typically combine multiple woods chosen for structural properties, predominantly elm for the shaped seat due to its cross-grained strength, alongside steam-bent ash or yew for the back bow and spindles.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-shaped saddle seats, wedged tenon joinery visible where the legs penetrate the seat top, uneven surface wear patterns, and evidence of hand-tooling or turning on the legs and spindles.

A traditional Windsor chair functions well as an accent piece in contemporary spaces, providing natural timber contrast against neutral walls in hallways, study areas, or positioned alongside modern upholstered furniture.

Maintain the finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, and cleaning surfaces gently with a dry microfiber cloth.
