Windsor Broad Arm Chair in Ash & Elm C1890

19th century
Description

An attractive Windsor broad arm chair in ash and fruitwood with elm seat. Broad arm Windsors first appeared in the latter part of the 19th century and were differentiated from their ‘narrow arm’ counterparts by the wide (broad) three part arm bow ending in a shaped ‘pad’. They are constructionally similar to captain’s chairs, but with the typical Windsor ‘hoop back’ as opposed to the captain’s chairs’ low shaped cresting comb which sits on top of the arm bow. Yorkshire c1890.

This Victorian country Windsor broad arm chair dates to circa 1890 and originates from Yorkshire. The timber displays a rich warm brown tone across the ash and fruitwood framework, complemented by a solid elm saddle seat. The design incorporates a classic hoop back enclosing a central vertical pierced splat with carved cut-outs, paired with a wide three-part arm bow terminating in shaped pads. Spindles support the back rest and curved arms, while the undercarriage consists of slender turned legs braced by a matching H-stretcher with central turning details. Restoration work includes tipped feet at the base of each leg. Measuring 115 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the chair occupies a practical footprint for everyday placement. In a contemporary home, this sturdy armchair serves as a functional and characterful seating option. It functions well as a desk chair in a study, an accent seat in a living room, or a traditional reading chair in a corner. The traditional country style integrates smoothly into rustic, cottage, or eclectic interior schemes, adding a distinct historical element to domestic spaces.

A Windsor chair is a wooden seated chair where the back uprights and legs are socketed directly into a solid timber seat, rather than continuing as part of the outer frame. Originating in England in the eighteenth century, these chairs feature steam-bent wooden hoops, turned spindles, and contoured saddle seats.

Traditional English Windsor chairs typically combine multiple timber species suited to specific components. Elm is commonly selected for the solid contoured seat due to its interlocking grain, while ash or beech is used for steam-bent hoops, turned spindles, and legs.

Authentic late Victorian Windsor chairs often exhibit turned legs, pierced central splats, and visible wedge-joint construction where the legs pass through the seat. Natural wear patterns appear on the front stretchers and armrests, alongside distinct wood graining across the elm seat.

A Windsor armchair functions effectively as a focal accent chair beside a reading light, at the head of a modern dining table, or within an entryway hall. Pairing rich timber tones with neutral textiles creates visual warmth and contrast in modern spaces.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and radiator units to prevent the timber from drying, shrinking, or splitting.
