Rare Pair of Victorian Elm and Beech Windsor Armchairs, C.1880

Description

A rare and wonderfully characterful pair of Victorian Windsor armchairs, dating to circa 1880, retaining traces of their original painted finish and possessing all the charm and honesty of traditional English country furniture.

Constructed in Elm and Beech, the chairs feature generously proportioned broad top rails above elegant spindle backs, with beautifully turned arm supports and well-shaped, comfortable seats. Raised on finely turned legs, united by traditional H-stretchers, they have excellent proportions and a particularly pleasing country appearance.

Fresh from a barn, the chairs retain a wonderfully dry, untouched surface with traces of their original paint, giving them exceptional rustic character and an appealing sense of history. The naturally aged timber and surviving painted decoration create a lovely patina that would be difficult to replicate.

Both chairs are solid, sturdy and exceptionally comfortable, making them as practical as they are decorative.

An increasingly difficult-to-find pair of 19th-century Windsor armchairs, with wonderful country house appeal. Their honest, untouched appearance makes them particularly suitable for a farmhouse kitchen, country cottage or traditional interior.
