Cross-grained walnut veneer on the moulded frame: early 18th-century cabinet work.
Carved and gilded shell roundel set into the cresting: George I style.
Inner water-gilded slip with carved leaf pattern: period framing.
Broad, soft bevel on the glass: traditional hand grinding.
Darkened patina and fine shrinkage lines across the veneer: long natural ageing.

This 18th-century Queen Anne wall mirror is made from warm brown walnut with mirror glass and gilt elements. The rectangular glass has a bevelled edge within a moulded frame, surmounted by fretwork cresting and a scroll-cut shaped apron at the base. A carved gilt shell motif adorns the top cresting, and the frame shows visible grain patterns alongside subtle edge wear. The piece measures 107 cm high, 61.5 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Position this wall mirror above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living space to reflect natural light and create a sense of depth. Its traditional English country house aesthetic suits both heritage interiors and rooms with period architectural features.

Mirrors from the early-to-mid 18th century were characterised by figure-grained walnut veneers, delicate fretwork aprons, and carved architectural crestings. Designs often incorporated gilded details, such as central scallop shells or eagles, alongside narrow moulded borders framing hand-blown mirror glass.

These frames were typically constructed using a softwood or oak primary carcase overlaid with figured walnut veneers. Decorative cresting elements were hand-carved, often highlighted with water gilding, while the reflective glass was mercury-silvered with hand-bevelled edges.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-sawn backboards with irregular oxidation, thin walnut veneers showing natural shrinkage, and hand-bevelled glass plate edges that follow the contour of the inner frame moulding. Signs of mercury silvering distress or minor re-gilding to carved motifs are also common indicators of age.

Positioning a period walnut mirror above a contemporary console table or mantelpiece creates a refined visual contrast between classic woodwork and clean modern lines. Mounting the mirror opposite a light source maximises illumination across warm timber tones.

The timber frame should be dusted regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth and occasionally polished with a high-quality beeswax to nourish the veneer. Avoid applying liquid glass cleaner directly to the mirror plate to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame moulding and degrading the silvering.
