This Victorian mahogany cheval mirror dates from circa 1880 and comes in warm brown tones with a flame mahogany veneer. The rectangular pivoting frame houses an original mirror plate within a cushion moulding, supported by turned side uprights with adjustment knobs, turned finials, and carved scroll feet. The verso bears a stamp from Hutton's of Barnstaple Devon, and the piece retains its original brass roundels and bushes. Measuring 145 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 62 cm deep, this freestanding mirror suits placement in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway to provide full-length reflection while adding traditional Victorian character to an interior space.

A cheval mirror is a full-length dressing glass mounted in a frame on upright supports, allowing the mirror to tilt forward or backward. Popularised in the 19th century, Victorian examples were designed for bedrooms and dressing rooms to provide a complete head-to-toe view.

Victorian cheval mirrors were predominantly crafted using solid hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, often featuring flame mahogany veneers. High-grade plate glass with silvering was used for the mirror pane, supported by brass friction knobs or ratchets to hold the tilt mechanism.

Authentic Victorian pieces often showcase hand-carved scroll feet, heavy turned uprights, brass adjustment knobs, and hand-cut dovetails on internal frame joints. Looking at the reverse side, original backboards are typically made of hand-sawn softwood panels displaying natural patination and age marks.

Position the mirror near a natural light source in a dressing space, bedroom, or hallway to amplify light and add visual depth. Pair the rich mahogany tones with neutral plaster walls, contemporary textiles, or minimalist decor to balance traditional craftsmanship with modern simplicity.

Clean the wooden frame using a soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish occasionally, moving in the direction of the grain. Avoid chemical glass cleaners on the mirror pane, especially near the edges, to prevent solution from seeping into the wooden rebate and damaging the silvering.
