Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE REGENCY ERA:
Verre églomisé glass frieze with gilded sheaves: neoclassical reverse painting of the era.
Reeded flanking pilasters with acanthus capitals: Regency architectural frame design.
Breakfront cornice over projecting column blocks: classical taste of the period.
Gesso showing through worn water gilding: natural age and long handling.
Localised clouding in the mirror plate: old silvering.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Visible details include minor knocks to the gilding, a painted frieze panel on glass, reeded columns, and a wire hanging cord attached to the top. The piece measures 81 cm high and 34 cm wide. Position this decorative antique above a sideboard in a dining room, living room, or hallway to add a classical Regency aesthetic to interior spaces. The mirror suits traditional country house interiors and functions effectively as a wall-mounted accent piece.

FAQs

Pier mirrors originated in 18th and 19th-century European interior design, primarily created to occupy the narrow wall space between windows, known as the pier. Designed to maximize daylight and architectural depth, these mirrors frequently incorporated gilded frames, Neoclassical pilasters, and painted upper friezes.

These mirrors were constructed with soft wood or oak cores coated with gesso and gold leaf through water gilding techniques. Upper decorative panels were often executed with oil paints or verre eglomise, framing hand-blown mirrored plate glass backed with mercury or silver mixtures.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including slight oxidation or foxing within the glass silvering, surface wear on the gilding revealing red or yellow bole beneath, and hand-carved wood jointing on the reverse side.

Positioning a gilded mirror above a sleek console table or fireplace mantel provides architectural contrast within modern spaces. Combining historic gilt frames with minimalist backdrops highlights classical gilding techniques alongside contemporary decor.

Dust the giltwood frame gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Avoid moisture or chemical solvents on the frame, and clean the glass plate using a dry microfiber cloth dampened slightly with distilled water.
