The Louis Philippe mirror emerged in mid-19th-century France, characterised by a rectangular frame with softly rounded top corners and a flat bottom edge. These mirrors feature clean, restrained mouldings, often embellished with subtle beaded or floral rim details.

Traditional frames were constructed from pine or oak covered in gesso and decorated with gold leaf applied over a layer of red or yellow clay ground called bole. The mirror plates were made using mercury-silvered glass, which oxidises over time to create a distinct spotted or foxed effect.

Authentic period pieces feature backboards made of hand-sawn wooden planks rather than modern plywood or MDF. Wear to the gilded surface typically reveals the red bole ground beneath, and the glass will often exhibit natural oxidisation, dark spots, or minor distortion.

These mirrors serve as effective focal points when mounted above a fireplace mantel, positioned on a hallway console, or leaned against a wall in a bedroom. The classic frame profile integrates seamlessly with contemporary, rustic, or minimalist design schemes.

Dust the frame gently using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve the water-gilded gesso. Clean the mirror plate by spraying glass cleaner onto a cloth rather than directly onto the glass to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
