Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in France during the reign of King Louis Philippe in the mid-nineteenth century, these mirrors feature rectangular frames with characteristic soft, rounded top corners and squared bottom corners. They typically showcase clean, unornamented outer profiles often accented with subtle beaded inner borders.

These frames are constructed from carved timber coated with gesso, followed by a layer of red clay bole and genuine gold leaf. The mirror plate historically utilised mercury silvering, which produces gentle foxing and oxidisation over time.

Authentic period examples generally exhibit hand-carved solid pine or oak backboards, natural silvering degradation on the glass plate, and subtle red bole showing through areas where the gilding has worn away.

These mirrors are frequently placed above a fireplace mantelpiece, rested on a hallway console, or mounted above a bedroom chest of drawers to create contrast between historic craftsmanship and clean contemporary lines.

Dust the frame regularly using a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve water-gilded gesso or damage the leaf finish. Clean the glass carefully with a slightly dampened cloth without touching the gilt edges.
