Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Shaped top rail and bevelled plate: early 20th-century Georgian revival cabinetmaking.
Small brass barrel castors on downswept legs: typical interwar bedroom hardware.
Tapering uprights capped with turned finials: classic proportions of the period.
Turned lower stretcher: standard frame bracing for tall dressing mirrors.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This tall, slim cheval dressing mirror dates from the 1920 Georgian Revival period, constructed in a warm brown mahogany timber with a polished finish and clear mirror glass. The freestanding piece has a shaped upper mirror frame, uprights capped with small turned finials, and a low turned stretcher above splayed legs that rest on original brass castors. Side brass screws secure the glass and enable adjustable tilting. The mirror stands 174 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 49 cm deep. Traditional proportions and rich timber tones make the cheval mirror a practical addition for a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway corner. It provides a full-length reflection while occupying minimal floor space, suiting both period interiors and modern rustic settings. The functional tilting mechanism allows easy adjustment for daily use, while the classic design brings traditional English character to any empty corner.

A cheval mirror, named after the French word for horse due to its four-legged frame design, is a full-length dressing mirror suspended between two upright timber posts, allowing the mirror glass to tilt freely.

Cheval mirrors from the 1920s were typically constructed using solid or veneered mahogany, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, turned decorative uprights, shaped legs, and brass swivel mechanisms to adjust the mirror angle.

Authentic period pieces feature natural timber patination, hand-fitted backboards, original brass tension screws or knobs on the pivots, and subtle signs of age such as light foxing to the silvering on the mirror plate.

Place the mirror in a dressing area, bedroom, or spacious hallway to maximise light reflectivity and introduce architectural height while grounding the scheme with traditional wood tones.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, while cleaning the glass plate with a soft lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water.
