This mid-Victorian wall mirror dates from approximately 1875 and follows the Rococo Revival style. Constructed from timber, gesso, and glass, the lozenge-shaped frame carries an original patinated gilt finish in gold, enclosing the original quarter-plate mirror glass. The piece is decorated with scrollwork, floral relief, acanthus leaf cresting at the top pediment, and a matching smaller crest at the base. Visible details include carved floral rosettes at the sides, C-scrolls throughout the frame, and a boarded back fitted with secure hardware for wall hanging. The mirror measures 91.5 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 7.5 cm deep. Suitable for domestic settings, this wall mirror hangs well above a mantelpiece in a living room, above a console table in a hallway, or as a decorative accent in a bedroom. The ready-to-hang condition allows for straightforward installation on a suitable wall, bringing period character and reflective light into traditional or contemporary interiors.

Mid-Victorian Rococo Revival mirrors are characterised by ornate scrollwork, acanthus leaf motifs, C-scrolls, and asymmetrical flourishes reminiscent of 18th-century French design. Popular during the mid-19th century, these frames feature elaborate cresting and gilded finishes applied over carved timber or moulded gesso.

Victorian giltwood mirrors were typically constructed using pine or hardwood frames finished with moulded composition or carved timber detailing. The surface was prepared with multiple layers of gesso before fine gold leaf was applied using traditional water or oil gilding techniques.

Authentic Victorian gilt mirrors display natural surface patination, minor craquelure in the gesso, and areas where red or grey bole shows beneath worn gold leaf. The reverse of the frame generally features rough-sawn timber backing boards and period iron hanging fixtures.

A Victorian gilt mirror functions as a visual focal point when positioned above a mantelpiece, console table, or hallway sideboard. Placing the elaborate gilded frame against a modern neutral or dark painted backdrop allows the architectural scrollwork to stand out effectively.

Giltwood frames require gentle maintenance because moisture and chemical cleaners degrade thin gold leaf. Dust the carved surfaces regularly using a dry, soft camel-hair brush, and clean the mirror glass separately using a microfibre cloth slightly dampened with water.
