This late Regency convex mirror belongs to the Regency period and functions as a wall mirror. The piece consists of a giltwood, glass, and gesso construction finished in gold. A carved eagle surmount crowns the top of the frame, holding a suspended chain in its beak that connects to a small ball, while an acanthus leaf drop adorns the bottom apron. The circular frame features a moulded profile surrounded by applied ball decoration, enclosing a convex glass plate that reflects a distorted wide-angle view of the surrounding interior space. The overall dimensions measure 102 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Positioning this mirror above the mantel in a living room, hallway, or dining room creates a striking focal point. The reflective surface brightens darker corners by bouncing ambient light around the space while adding a formal traditional character to the interior. The robust proportions command attention on a plain wall, pairing well with period or classic room schemes.

Regency convex mirrors originated in the early 19th century, featuring circular curved glass set within gilded frames adorned with spherules and eagle surmounts.

These mirrors were constructed from carved wood or gesso over timber frames, finished with applied gold leaf and fitted with silvered convex glass.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved wooden construction, natural oxidisation to the gold leaf, and slight foxing across the original convex glass.

Positioning a convex mirror above a mantelpiece or sideboard enables the curved glass to reflect light and capture a wide perspective of the room.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquids or chemical cleaners that degrade gold leaf.
