This set of four 18th-century Irish dining chairs exemplifies the Georgian style, constructed from mahogany and oak with a dark brown finish. Each piece has a pierced ladder back comprising four horizontal slats, sturdy square legs, and an H-stretcher base. The chairs are fitted with square drop-in seat cushions upholstered in a striped fabric featuring red and off-white bands. Natural signs of age appear on the weathered wood surfaces, while the cushion covers show soft folds and lived-in creases from use. The overall dimensions measure 95 cm high, 55.5 cm wide, and 54 cm deep. These chairs suit a traditional dining room, country kitchen, or a living space designed with an English country house aesthetic. They provide practical, characterful seating around a timber dining table or function as occasional accent chairs placed against a wall. The robust wooden frames and supportive high backs offer everyday utility for family meals or entertaining guests.

FAQs

Eighteenth-century Irish country seating features robust timber construction, regional joinery techniques, and distinct horizontal slatted or ladder-back designs adapted from Georgian patterns.

Craftsmen typically utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, incorporating mortise and tenon joints with square legs and H-stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed wood surfaces, historical wear along lower stretchers, hand-cut joint construction, and natural oxidisation on unpolished undersides.

These chairs can be paired with a minimalist modern dining table or rustic timber table to create visual contrast in contemporary dining rooms.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and high humidity, dust regularly using a dry cloth, and apply natural beeswax annually to maintain the patination.
