Irish Mahogany Chair Circa 1770 with 19th Century Copy.

Description

A pair of mahogany side chairs. One is an Irish example circa 1770 with the other being a later copy made by Cowtan and Sons Ltd of Oxford St. London circa 1880. These chairs are of exceptional quality including fine carving down the legs. Very wide seats covered in green leather. The later chair has the Cowtan stamp.

Cowtan and Sons were an important interior decoration company famous for their wallpaper and whose customers included UK and European royalty. On a lesser scale they produced some top quality pieces of furniture which are now rare.

We offer these chairs for sale as a pair but would consider selling seperately. (£1295 / £700)

This pair of Georgian dining chairs comprises an Irish mahogany side chair from circa 1770 and a later nineteenth-century copy produced around 1880 by Cowtan and Sons of Oxford Street, London. Both items are constructed from dark brown mahogany with square legs and serpentine top rails featuring carved detailing and pierced lattice splats. The wide seats are upholstered in green leather finished with brass studding along the lower edge. Each chair stands 99 cm in height with a 60 cm width, a 48 cm depth, and a 46 cm seat height. These side chairs suit placement around a traditional dining table in a country house dining room or as accent seating in a study or hallway. The maker's stamp appears on the later chair.
