School House Antiques has dated these William IV Mahogany Dining Chairs to the 19th Century.
The boldly sculpted crest rails rise in an undulating wave with scrolled ends forming the characteristic dolphin silhouette, with pendant tulip or floral carvings between the scrolls. The carving is crisp and fully three-dimensional, executed in solid, well-figured mahogany.

The gently shaped back uprights frame open, comfortable backs. The seats are generously proportioned drop-in leather pads (black) showing honest age and patina. Front legs are turned with tapered legs , rear legs taper or sweep gently. Proportions are excellent, joints are tight, and the mahogany retains a rich, warm colour. Surface wear is consistent with nearly two centuries of use, with no structural issues.

Extremely comfortable, handsome , high-quality Irish dining chairs, The frame's are structural solid , suitable for everyday use .
They represent the best of Irish cabinet-making at a moment when Dublin workshops were still producing furniture of genuine distinction for the grand houses of Ireland.
