A pair of Victorian wall mirrors from 1920 offers a traditional touch for an English country house interior. Each piece consists of a glass looking glass enclosed in a wide moulded oval frame with a warm brown scumble wood effect finish. The framing displays a decorative egg-and-dart border and a beaded inner rim, with visible faux graining across the painted wood and plaster surfaces. The mirrors measure 61 cm high and 53 cm wide. These matching mirrors suit placement above a sideboard in a dining room or living area. They function well as decorative wall accessories to reflect light and enhance smaller wall spaces in a traditional home.

Faux graining, also known as faux bois, is a decorative paint technique popularised during the nineteenth century to imitate figured wood grain patterns, such as walnut or mahogany, on softwood or plaster base frames.

Traditional oval mirror frames were crafted using shaped softwood bases, often overlaid with moulded gesso or composition details to form raised patterns before paint or gilding was applied.

Authentic pieces display hand-applied paint glazes with subtle brush strokes, natural surface wear, and period-appropriate backings such as solid wood panels secured with hand-cut nails.

Mounting a matching pair side-by-side above a console table or sideboard creates architectural symmetry, while placing them opposite windows enhances light within narrow or dim spaces.

Dust the frames regularly using a soft, dry cloth or feather duster, avoiding moisture or chemical cleaners that could dissolve historical paint glazes or clear topcoats.
