FAQs

Eighteenth-century giltwood mirrors feature hand-carved wooden frames coated in thin layers of gold leaf over a gesso base, often incorporating Rococo motifs such as acanthus leaves, scrollwork, and shell crests.

Craftsmen carved the frame from timber, applied multiple layers of chalky gesso foundation, painted it with clay bole, and applied fine gold leaf before hand-burnishing selected highlights.

Authentic period pieces often exhibit hand-chiseled timber backings, mercury-silvered glass showing mild foxing, visible seam lines in the gold leaf, and subtle wear revealing the reddish bole beneath.

Positioning a carved gilt mirror above a contemporary sideboard, fireplace mantel, or console table creates an intentional contrast between classical craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Dust the carved frame lightly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or water that could dissolve the gesso foundation and loosen the gold leaf.
