Description

An impressive and beautifully designed pair of antique Swedish neoclassical solid elm armchairs. They are in the Gustavian style, they were recently imported from Sweden and date from around the 1890-1900 period.

The quality is outstanding, and they are of lovely proportions. The solid elm frames are beautifully shaped, they are very comfortable. The arm rests scroll over nicely at the front, the front legs kick out in a beautiful sabre shaped design. The paws of the front feet are beautifully designed and ebonised, one of the tiny rounded carved pieces has come off at some stage, this is barely noticeable as the section is ebonised like the rest, it is seen in the images.

We have had the frames re-polished and they have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The grain patterns and colour tones of the wood are gorgeous, they are in excellent overall condition.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Swedish Neoclassical design, which includes the renowned Gustavian style, emerged in the late 18th century under King Gustav III. It combined classical proportions and symmetry inspired by French and Italian design with a distinctively restrained Scandinavian simplicity and elegance.

These pieces were typically constructed from regional European hardwoods such as elm, birch, or pine. Frames were hand-carved, joined using traditional mortise and tenon techniques, and traditionally upholstered using natural stuffings like horsehair, wool, and linen webbing.

Authentication involves examining construction methods such as hand-cut joints, tool marks, and the ageing characteristics of the wood. Original hardware, traditional upholstery layering, and regional timber species also provide strong indicators of period manufacture.

These armchairs serve as focal points when paired with contemporary minimalist sofas or placed in transitional living spaces. Their clean lines and neutral upholstery allow them to bridge traditional and modern design aesthetics seamlessly.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and protecting the timber from direct sunlight to prevent drying and cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and professional conservation cleaning for the upholstery ensure long-term integrity.
