Pair of Antique Swedish Neoclassical Mahogany Armchairs

19th century
Description

A stunning pair of antique Swedish neoclassical mahogany armchairs. They are in the Gustavian style, they were recently imported from Sweden and date from around the 1880-1900 period.

The quality is outstanding, and they are of lovely proportions. The solid mahogany frames are beautifully designed, with very high quality ormolu mounts on the arms, lower edges of the seats and the upper edges of the back rests.

We have had the frames re-polished and they have been re-upholstered in a cream cotton fabric. The condition is superb throughout.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Swedish Neoclassical furniture, prominent from the late eighteenth to nineteenth centuries, adapts Greco-Roman classical forms with restrained elegance. It features straight lines, geometric symmetry, tapered legs, and subtle embellishments such as brass or bronze gilt mounts.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or birch for frame construction. Decorative accents often incorporated gilt-bronze (ormolu) or brass fittings, paired with natural fibre upholstery fabrics like linen, cotton, or silk.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, traditional hand-carved mahogany elements, and original weight in the frame structure. Look for age-appropriate wear on the timber, historical oxidisation on metal mounts, and hand-stitched upholstery foundation techniques underneath modern coverings.

Place a pair of Neoclassical armchairs opposite a neutral contemporary sofa to create balance and contrast. The combination of rich mahogany frames and light upholstery bridges historical architecture with modern minimalist room designs.

Maintain timber surfaces by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Metal mounts should be dusted gently without harsh chemical cleaners, while fabric upholstery requires light vacuuming using a soft brush attachment.
