We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors originated in the 17th century and became prominent in 18th and 19th-century interiors, specifically designed to be hung or placed on the mantelpiece above a fireplace to reflect light and fill the vertical wall space.

These pieces typically feature a hand-carved wooden base overlaid with gessoa chalk-based plaster mixturewhich is then meticulously gilded with gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentic pieces often show signs of age such as foxing on the original mercury or silvered glass plate, hand-tooled gesso details, shrinkage cracks in the wood, and traditional peg joinery on the reverse.

A large gilt mirror can be mounted above a modern minimalist fireplace to create a striking contrast, or simply rested on the floor against a neutral wall to add architectural weight and reflect natural light.

Dust the gilded frame gently with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or microfiber cloth, avoiding any moisture, chemical solvents, or abrasive cleaners that can damage the delicate historical gesso and gold leaf surface.
