A Windsor armchair is a traditional seating type featuring a solid wooden seat into which the legs and back spindles are wedged directly. The crinoline stretcher refers to the curved, hoop-like under-framing that links the legs together for added structural rigidity, characteristic of 18th-century designs.

Traditional Windsor chairs typically utilised a combination of timbers chosen for their specific properties, such as yew or elm for seats due to their resistance to splitting, ash or beech for the bentwood bows and spindles, and fruitwood or pine for the undercarriage.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks, timber shrinkage, construction joints, and overall patina. Genuine older pieces often exhibit adze marks on the underside of the seat, hand-turned spindles with slight irregularities, and traditional wedged tenon joints.

Such pieces function effectively as statement accent seats in contemporary living spaces, studies, or bedrooms. Pairing the warm tones of the wood with neutral backdrops or contrasting minimalist textures highlights its craftsmanship without overcrowding the room.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels and avoiding direct sunlight or heat sources to prevent timber cracking. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth and occasional application of appropriate beeswax helps maintain the finish.
