A Victorian broad arm Windsor chair is a regional English wooden armchair characterized by a solid saddle seat into which the back spindles and turned legs are directly jointed. The broad arm designation refers to the widened, flattened armrests engineered for comfort during the mid-to-late 19th century.

Traditional Windsor chairs are constructed using a combination of English hardwoods, often combining an elm seat for strength with steam-bent ash, fruitwood, or yew for the back bows, spindles, and turned legs. The components are assembled using wedged mortise and tenon joints without reliance on metal fasteners.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-lathe turned leg stretchers, natural surface wear along the armrests and front seat edge, and hand-carved saddle shaping on the seat base. Timber oxidation and historic shrinkage along grain lines also indicate genuine period construction.

An antique Windsor chair functions effectively as a standalone accent chair in an entryway, alongside a contemporary desk, or positioned near a hearth. Its natural timber finish contrasts with modern clean lines and minimalist upholstery.

Dust the wood regularly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax polish annually to protect the patination. Avoid placement in direct sunlight or adjacent to central heating radiators to prevent timber shrinkage and joint loosening.
