Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Moulded composition ornament over timber: framing practice from the late nineteenth century.

This French Rococo trumeau mirror from 1880 is constructed from giltwood, glass, painted canvas, and gesso, finished in gold with a scrollwork pediment and a leaf-moulded beaded frame. The composition includes an upper inset pastoral scene panel depicting figures in a landscape above a rectangular deep bevelled mirror glass pane with an original back. Visible details include elaborate pierced carving on the upper scrollwork finial, ornate gilded floral and scroll decoration on the painted upper panels, and textured gesso moulding surrounding the glass. Measuring 151 cm high by 81 cm wide, this wall mirror suits placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway. It functions effectively in traditional interiors or French chateau inspired rooms as an anchor piece that reflects ambient light while providing both decorative artwork and functional reflection.

A trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France as an architectural wall element, designed to fit between windows or above a fireplace. It characteristically features a glass mirror pane beneath an upper painted canvas or carved relief panel within a single gilded frame.

Traditional trumeau mirrors feature hand-carved wood frames coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding. The upper section typically incorporates an oil-painted canvas or panel, while the lower section houses silvered or mercury glass.

Authentic examples demonstrate hand-hewn backboards, natural wearing to the gold leaf gilding revealing underlying gesso or bole, and age-appropriate craquelure on the painted panel. The mirror glass frequently exhibits subtle spotting or oxidisation along the edges.

A trumeau mirror can be positioned directly above a fireplace mantelpiece or mounted over a hallway console table to establish symmetry. Its tall vertical proportion draws the eye upward to accentuate ceiling height.

Maintain giltwood frames using a dry, soft microfibre cloth or soft duster to avoid disturbing fragile gold leaf. Avoid applying liquid chemical cleaners directly to the frame or upper artwork, applying glass cleaner strictly to a cloth before wiping the lower pane.
