Belle Époque French Gilded and Olive Green Wall Mirror with Ribbon Crest H153cm

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Spinka & Co
Description

p0234 A slim and remarkably charming French Belle Époque wall mirror, dating to circa 1900. This fine antique pier-style mirror is highly unique for its multi-layered composition, featuring its original paintwork and gilding preserved in untouched condition. The central design showcases the original bevelled edge glass mirror plate, which displays an authentic, gentle aging that adds character. The glass is housed within a moulded and flower carved gilded frame adorned with delicate gilded floral swags. This ornate woodwork is set against its original olive green painted board, offering a beautiful, muted contrast that allows the gold detailing to shine. The crowning glory of this elegant piece is a prominent carved and gilded ribbon bow at the crest. The mirror retains its original backboards equipped with four fixing brackets. A wonderful statement piece for an entryway, hallway, or above a mantle, presented in home-ready condition. c1900

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Belle Epoque and Neoclassical French wall mirrors typically feature symmetrical proportions, architectural cresting, ribbon-knot motifs, and delicate floral swags inspired by classical antiquity.

These pieces were typically constructed from carved timber or moulded composition ornament over pine frames, finished with water-gilded gold leaf and hand-painted accent panels.

Authentic examples display natural oxidisation or silvering loss on the glass plate, original wire or wedge joinery on the backboard, and subtle red bole clay showing beneath worn gilding.

Position the mirror above a contemporary sideboard, fireplace, or console table to establish a focal point that contrasts historical carving details against clean modern lines.

Dust the gilded frame gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or solvents which can dissolve traditional gilding glues and lift the gold leaf.
