Water gilded mirrors from the early 20th century frequently feature geometric profiles, such as octagonal or clipped-corner shapes, decorated with delicate moulded details inspired by Neoclassical and French design.

Water gilding involves coating a wooden frame with layers of gesso and coloured clay bole, onto which thin sheets of gold leaf are applied using a water-based solution before being burnished with an agate stone.

Authentic water gilding typically displays areas where the reddish or grey clay bole beneath the leaf shows through wear, along with a distinct, brilliant shine where the gold leaf was agate-burnished.

A pair of matching wall mirrors can be hung symmetrically on either side of a central feature, such as a fireplace alcove, window, or piece of art, to improve natural light and visual balance.

Water gilded frames must be dry dusted using a soft feather duster or gentle brush; water and liquid cleaning solutions should be avoided, as moisture dissolves the traditional water-soluble size underneath the gold leaf.
