We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

FAQs

Giltwood mirrors have been crafted for centuries, gaining prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in Europe, particularly in Italy and France, where master artisans applied thin layers of gold leaf to carved wooden frames.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed from softwoods such as pine or lime, carved by hand, coated with a layer of gesso, and finished with gold leaf applied over bole.

Authenticity is determined by examining the gesso layer for age-related cracking, checking for hand-carved tool marks on the reverse, and looking for mercury or early silvering oxidation on the glass plate.

Pairing an ornate gold mirror with minimalist furnishings creates a striking contrast that highlights the craftsmanship while grounding the rooms overall aesthetic.

Preserve giltwood by avoiding direct sunlight, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth without using liquid cleaners or abrasives that can strip the delicate gold leaf.
