Edwardian furniture makers frequently revived classical Georgian aesthetics, incorporating refined proportions, symmetrical forms, and traditional gilding techniques originally popular in the 18th century.

These pieces typically feature a carved wooden base coated in gesso and finished with thin layers of gold leaf or gilt paint, often accompanied by original or period-appropriate bevelled mirror glass and chain hangers.

Authentication relies on examining the substrate wood, the type of gesso and gold leaf application, signs of natural oxidisation on the mirror plate, and traditional hand-assembly methods on the reverse frame.

Placing these pieces above a modern fireplace, console table, or sideboard creates an effective focal point that contrasts ornate metallic textures with clean, minimalist lines.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted gently using a dry, soft brush and kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent the fragile gesso and gold leaf from cracking or flaking.
