FAQs

Windsor armchairs originated in rural England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components like spindles and legs were turned on a lathe and fitted into a solid wooden seat.

Authentic pieces typically feature a combination of native timbers such as elm for the sculpted seat, ash or beech for the bentwood bow and spindles, and fruitwood or oak for the legs, utilizing traditional wedged tenon joints.

Authentication involves examining the tool marks, hand-turned variations in the spindles, shrinkage cracks in the solid elm seat, and the type of wedging used where the legs pass through the seat base.

These pieces can be integrated into contemporary spaces by pairing them with a sleek, minimalist dining table or placing them as accent seating in a study to introduce warmth, texture, and historical contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to prevent timber shrinkage, avoiding direct sunlight, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the historic finish.
