This 19th-century Windsor armchair comes from the English Country style tradition and belongs to the 1850 period. Constructed from warm brown yew and elm timber, the piece features a high hoop back, a central pierced fretwork splat, and a shaped wooden saddle seat. Fine craftsmanship is evident in the slender turned spindles, the scrolled arms terminating in rounded handgrips, and the heavily turned legs joined by stretchers. Surface wear reveals a rich patination and grain variation across the polished wooden surfaces. Practical dimensions measure 116 cm high, 63 cm wide, and 66 cm deep, with a 34.5 cm distance between the front supports. Suitable for placement in a traditional study, a reading corner, or around a dining table, this seating option brings heritage character to living spaces.

FAQs

A Windsor armchair is a solid wooden seat into which the chair legs, back spindles, and arm supports are driven using socketed joinery, rather than continuing the back legs up into the backrest frame.

Windsor chairs were frequently made using a combination of regional hardwoods; seats were commonly carved from elm for its grain strength, while backs, spindles, and legs were steam-bent or turned from yew, ash, beech, or oak.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically feature hand-carved saddle seats with visible wedge-tenon construction underneath, uneven hand-turned legs, natural wear on the stretcher rails, and rich surface patination.

An antique Windsor chair works well as a standalone accent piece in a modern hallway, paired alongside a minimal contemporary desk, or set around an eclectic dining table.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage.
