This nineteenth-century English country Windsor armchair is constructed from yew wood and elm with a warm brown finish. The traditional rustic farmhouse seat features a hoop back framing a central pierced splat, slender spindles, outward-curving arms with turned supports, and turned legs joined by a curved crinoline stretcher. Visible details include the deep figure of the one-piece elm seat, the turned balusters beneath the armrests, and the shaped profile of the central splat. Suitable for use in a living room, study, or hallway, this chair provides a practical seating option for a traditional or eclectic interior. It measures 92 cm high, 56 cm wide, and 37 cm deep.

Maintain wooden seating by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish periodically. Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood movement or splitting along grain lines.

Position a single Windsor armchair as an accent piece in a quiet reading corner, hallway, or beside a minimalist desk to introduce warm wood tones. Pairing historic timber chairs with contemporary neutral walls creates a balanced contrast in modern spaces.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved seat profiles, subtle irregularity in hand-turned legs, and steam-bent back bows. Yew wood exhibits a distinct deep reddish-brown tone with dense grain patterns, knot figure, and natural wear around the stretcher rails.

Traditional Windsor chairs were crafted using regional hardwoods such as yew wood, elm, ash, and beech. The seat was typically carved from a single slab of elm, while the back bow and spindles were formed using steam-bent yew or ash timber.

A Windsor chair is a classic form of wooden seating characterised by a solid shaped seat into which the legs, back spindles, and arm supports are round-tenoned. Originating in England in the 18th century, these chairs became standard domestic seating across Britain.
