A Very Unusual Yew Wood Windsor Chair C 1830

19th century
Description

A Very unusual and Rare Yew wood Windsor chair firstly it has a blind back splat ( not pierced ), but also it only has three spindles either side of the back splat and it has never had any more, the underarm turned supports are quite well turned so i dont think it was made like this for cheapness, i am sure its from the north Nottinghamshire region, the condition is excellent and a nice colour and patina.

This nineteenth-century English country armchair originates from the north Nottinghamshire region, dating to approximately 1830. Constructed from yew wood and elm, the chair displays a warm brown timber colour with a rich patina across the shaped saddle seat, hoop back and sweeping arms. A distinctive blind back splat sits at the center of the upper backrest, flanked by three turned spindles on either side. The curved armrests are supported by finely turned upright posts, echoing the profile of the spindle balusters. Below the seat, four turned legs connect via a bowed crinoline stretcher that braces the lower structure. Signs of age appear in the gentle surface wear and grain variation across the wooden surfaces. Practical applications for this piece include placement as an occasional desk chair or a decorative seat in a hallway, living room or bedroom. The physical footprint measures 93 cm high, 57 cm wide and 40 cm deep, with a seat height of 44 cm, making it suitable for standard seating arrangements.

A Windsor chair is a wooden chair constructed with a solid shaped seat into which the legs, back spindles, and arm supports are socketed using mortise and tenon joints, originating in England during the early 18th century.

Yew wood was historically favoured for its exceptional flexibility when steam-bent, rich reddish-brown grain patterns, and durability, though its scarcity made it more exclusive than native beech or elm.

Authentic 19th-century Windsor chairs display hand-shittled spindles, hand-shaped saddle seats, wedged tenon joints visible on top of the seat, and natural wear patterns on the foot terminals and arm bow.

A classic wooden Windsor chair can serve as an accent chair in a contemporary living space, positioned beside a reading light or paired with a modern desk to create tactile contrast.

Keep yew wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or timber bleaching, and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually along the natural grain.
