Note: George Smith was a London designer, cabinet maker and upholder (c.1786–1826). He is described on the title page of his ambitious and influential pattern book A Collection of Designs for Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1808, as ‘upholder extraordinary to his Royal Highness the Prince of Wales’; with designs strictly adhering to original antique forms minimally altered for ''modern'' use. The following year George Smith, Thomas Hope''s disciple, began his series of publications, in the most Approved and Elegant Taste which was well-received and continued through the late 1820''s. Monopodia supports of all variations can be seen in the designs by these two men. The shapes are almost always architectural, sturdy and massive, if not monumental.
