Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This pair of early 19th-century Italian wall mirrors comes in the Rococo Revival style, fashioned from carved giltwood and mirrored glass in a rich gold finish. Each mirror has an elaborate ribbon-knot cresting at the top, extensive pierced rocaille scrollwork framing the glass, and an etched plate showing a basket of flowers. Natural signs of age appear on the reflective glass surfaces with darkening and mottled patination. The mirrors measure 90 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. Such wall mirrors work well in a home today when hung on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room to add decorative detail and reflect light. Their slender vertical proportions make them suitable for compact areas where traditional artwork might feel too heavy.

Nineteenth-century Italian giltwood mirrors are defined by elaborate carving, dramatic scrollwork, and rich gold leaf finishes inspired by Baroque and Rococo traditions.

These pieces typically consist of hand-carved timber frames coated with layers of gesso, finished with applied gold leaf, and fitted with silvered or mercury glass plates.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery on the reverse, subtle oxidation, red bole visible beneath worn gilding, and authentic age-related silvering wear on the mirror plate.

Flanking a doorway, fireplace alcove, or large piece of artwork with a matching pair of tall giltwood mirrors adds architectural height, symmetry, and ambient light reflection.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted gently with a soft dry brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids or chemical polishes that can dissolve historic gesso and water gilding.
